In a knowledge economy, people are the heart of any business organization. Organizations need to build, sharpen and leverage on their competitive advantage – people. Organizations of the 21st century recognize the fact that human resources are the most valuable resource of the company and are the key differentiating factor in this competitive scenario. HR professionals have generated a lot of interest in the notion of competencies as a key element and measure of human performance but one of the most challenging tasks of the HR professional is placing the right people in the right jobs. Competencies are components of a job which are reflected in behavior that is observable in a work place. The common element most frequently mentioned are knowledge, skills, abilities, aptitudes, personal suitability behavior and impact on performance at work. “Any underlying characteristics required for performing a given task, activity or role successfully can be considered as competency” Over the years, highly skilled, technical and knowledge based jobs are increasing while low skilled jobs are decreasing. This brings our attention to the fact that for future, skill mapping through proper HRM initiatives becomes the need of the hour. Competency mapping, the buzz word in any industry is the competence or the skill set which various thought leaders in business strategy have emphasized in order to compete in a specific environment. IT industry, being one of the top contributors in the economic growth of India, requires a skilled and competent workforce as per industry needs. Thus there is a requirement for the competency mapping and competency development of HR professionals in order to meet the challenges facing them. The aim of this research is to study the effectiveness of competency mapping in BGS Infotech private limited, Bangalore, it also tries to identify the grey areas in the implementation of competency mapping, and impact of competency mapping on employee performance.
