Incredible India!! It is well said that India is a unique country with diversity. India’s rich and abundant wildlife is because of its diverse climate and geography. India has many species includes birds and animals, and one among them are vultures. These Vultures are scavengers, and mostly feed on carcasses of dead animals. Vultures play a vital role in the ecosystem, cleaning the environment of rotting carcasses dead body. But by the time of 2007 there is a rapid rise in the rate of extinction of this species; more than 97% of vultures have disappeared from India in the past many years which is the rapid decline recorded in a bird population in the world. That day is not far when there will be no vultures left in our country. Hence this will result in the skewing up of our ecosystem.
One of the major reasons for this decline of vultures is a drug, called as diclofenac. Diclofenac is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which are given to the cattle's and when these cattle dies and vultures feeds upon them then, that drug is believed to be swallowed by vultures with the flesh of that dead cattle. Thus these Diclofenac causes kidney failure in several species of vultures. Finally in 2006 the Indian Government announced for the ban on the use of diclofenac over cattle.
Another reason for the decline is shortage of food and Lack of Nesting over Trees thus vultures don't get the proper food and home to live, thus they migrate most often and die.
Therefore, by taking this crisis into account the Indian government had introduced few conservation objective strategies to control the rate of extinction of vultures. Some of them are "Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre", "Enhancing Community-Based Vulture Conservation ","Conservation of Critically Endangered White Vulture ", "Red-headed Vulture Project" etc.
Many more solutions are there for this crisis that can be taken by humans like caring for the injured, ill, and orphaned vultures, Captive breeding, reinforcing populations, and providing proper protection to their Habitat. Reintroduction of vultures into their original habitats if any of them found lost, and one of the most important solutions is raising environmental education and awareness among the common people so that they can be aware of it. A Wild Life Conservation week is also celebrated on 7th of October every year.
“Thus save wildlife, to save your life”.
