it is a pretty simple question from series. 
42 40 38 35 33 31 28
if you look carefully every next number is reduced by 2 but after every set of three numbers it get reduced by 3. 
 so following that logic 
option should be indeed option C that is 26,24. 
42-40 = 2      40-38 = 2         38-35 =3
35-33 = 2      33-31 = 2          31-28 = 3
Therefore, 28- 26 = 2          26-24 = 2
Hence the correct pair is C.
