it's way of describing the delocalized Pi electrons within the certain molecules. For ex. Benzene,
Tautomerization is conversion of functional group between two species. For example Ketone to alcohal.
The difference is that resonance is not a real thing. The resonance structures of a molecule or ion have no real existence; they are simply approximations we draw on paper because we don't have the notation to write down what's actually happening. The best example of this is benzene. You can write down two resonance structures for benzene (more, actually, if you include the Dewar structures) but they are both meaningless because benzene has six identical carbon-carbon bonds. Benzene is no better described by the Kekule structures than the number 1.5 is by the numbers 1 and 2.
Tautomerism is a real thing that occurs when a molecule is in rapid equilibrium with an isomer of itself. This is a real reaction. It has an activation barrier, it has an equilibrium constant, it can be studied in the lab. At a sufficiently low temperature, tautomers may be isolable from each other as their interconversion has slowed to a workable rate. Resonance structures are never isolable, because they don't exist.
Resonance involves delocalization of pi electrons within the same molecule
Tautomerisation involves conversion between functional group of 2 species having same molecular formula
E.g., keto enol
The property of a compound that can be visualized as having two structures differing only in the distribution of electrons.( Resonance).
A form of isomerism in which a dynamic equilibrium between multiple isomers exists, such as that between an enol and a ketone.(Tautomerism)
Resonance is related to delocalistion of electrons but tautomeristion is a process where hydrogen migration takes place and convert keto group to enol group.
Well, resonance is a hypothetical phenomenon which is concerned with changing of bond type without change in number of electrons on any atom. Moreover,it does not involve migration of atoms in the molecule in any respect. An example is CO2,where C-O bond has partial single and partial double bond character. On the other hand, tautomerism implies migration of hydrogen atom between two polyvalent atoms, leading to different groups and hence diiferent compounds. It is not concerned with the stability of molecule.Example is CH3COCH2COOC2H5 which has two possibilities:- The keto group(as above) The enol group(CH3COH=CHCOOC2H5)
