India: Top buffalo meat exporter.
This complete prohibition on cattle slaughter is ill informed irrational and reflective of violent hindutva flexing its muscle, after having suffered from long bouts of "low self esteem". From a pragmatic point of view (though not wholly supported by the language in Art. 48), the ban is understandable for cows, but to extend them to other cattle on the same logic (of religious sanctity) is untenable and ill-informed. It is high time, the Supreme Court views this issue from a rational & pragmatic perspective - of clash of right to food choices and right to livelihood, as against the right to religious freedom (which ought to be first subjected to the rationality and inherent practice tests - both for the majority and the minority beliefs).
